contracts, all traders

In the week to Tuesday 6 Oct 2026, managed money (hedge funds and CTAs) cut 25,994 contracts of net long exposure in NYMEX WTI, to +53,598. That puts positioning at 28 on a 0–100 scale of its 3-year range (-38,154 to +293,235). A low reading leaves room for short covering if the news turns bullish. A high one means a lot of length that could be sold.

Who supplies the market

EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook, October 2026 edition, tables 3b–3d. History runs to September 2026, then EIA's forecast. Million barrels a day of crude and other liquids, except OPEC production and capacity, which are crude only. Groups follow EIA's tables: OPEC+ is the members bound by the OPEC+ agreements, and rest of world is everyone outside OPEC+ apart from the US.

b/d in September 2026: OPEC 7.34M, others 2.62M

EIA puts world liquids supply at 101.14M barrels a day in 2026, −5.13M on 2025. OPEC+ accounts for −4.49M of that, the United States +0.67M and the rest of the world −1.32M. For 2027 it forecasts 109.53M (+8.39M). OPEC's spare capacity, output it could bring on within 30 days and hold for 90, was 0.02M b/d in September 2026, so there is almost no cushion if more supply is lost.
